The impact of the British Empire has been felt worldwide since the 16th century. With the empire spreading outwards from England, this has led to a large English diaspora worldwide. Some are descendants of English people who settled foreign lands and created their own communities there. Others have a history which has stemmed from the interaction between English settlers and original populations. While some English arrivals had relationships of equals with locals in the countries they moved to, many settlers took on positions of prominence as the empire took control and some of these had illegitimate children with their staff or slaves. As a result, Creole and other mixed race populations of partial English descent now exist with their own unique cultures and history throughout the world.

In the 2000 census, 24,500,000 Americans described their ancestry as wholly or partly English. George Washington, known as the Father of America, had English ancestry. In a more recent census in Canada, close to 6.5 million people, around 20% of the population similarly claimed English lineage. Australia and New Zealand also have a large population of English descent.

One of the more surprising locations where English peoples had a major impact is Argentina, where settlers arrived from the early 1800s. Businessmen were welcomed to the then Spanish colony and as the century progressed more English families arrived, with some farming while others sought careers in railway engineering, banking and whaling.
