Golf in Wales

Golf has a long history in Wales, with the first short course built in 1875. During the 1880s several nine-hole courses were built in coastal areas, and it is generally accepted that Tenby was the first. The Welsh Golfing Union was formed in 1895, the second oldest in the World after the Irish Golfing Union. The Welsh Ladies' Golf Union was founded in 1904, and the two organisations merged to form Wales Golf in 2007.

The most famous Welsh golfer in recent years in Ian Woosnam. In 1987 he became the first player to win £1 million in prize money in a single year, and won a multitude of competitions during his career. He also captained the 2006 Ryder Cup team to victory.

Wales now has over 200 courses, including Celtic Manor, which played host to the Ryder Cup in 2010. It offers three world-class championship courses and has water features on half of it's holes.

Another stunning course worth playing during your time in Wales is Aberdovey, which hosted the first amateur competition in 1895. This challenging links course boasts that it's par-3 12th to a plateau green perched above the dunes, is one of the hardest par 3s in British golf.

Nefyn & District is another of the top golf courses in Wales. Is has a unique 2 course layout, each using the same first 10 holes, before separating for the back eight. Opening holes stunningly cling to the edge of the cliffs, and throughout your rounds you will have dramatic sea views. On very clear days, it is possible to see mountain tops across the Irish Sea in Wicklow.
