England's oldest castles date back to the 11th century with many of the first ones built by William the Conqueror as he struggled to take control over the country. Some stunning examples which are still in an excellent condition include Warwick Castle, Lincoln Castle and Norwich Castle. Norwich Castle is a uniquely shaped building, and is now home to Norwich Museum. It has been the site of a siege and a revolt, acted as a safehaven for Jews during a 12th century pogrom and was a prison from the 13th century onwards.
