English Culture & History

England has had it's own unique culture to the other nations of the British Isles since Anglo-Saxon times. When Roman rule ended in what is now England, those left behind sought protection from the Picts in Scotland, and this came from offering land to Northern European settlers.

Given that England’s cities later became the powerhouse of the British Empire, British culture, and with it, English culture, has spread to the four corners of the world. The most obvious example of this is how widely spoken the English language is around the globe.

Museums in England are a must during your visit, as they are full of examples of both the complex history of the country, and the British Empire, while they also house artifacts from throughout the British Empire. The British Museum and the V&A in London are two of those most worth checking out.

The influence of the Romans on English culture is still felt throughout the country, and there are some stunning towns worth visiting where this can be clearly seen today. For example, the Roman baths in Bath, are one of the best preserved Roman sites in the world.

For many of those visiting England, a very special aspect of English culture and history to be explored is the royal family, and making a visit to Buckingham Palace tops many peoples to do list. The Tower of London is another great place to learn more about England’s Royal history.
