There are estimated to be somewhere between 500 and 2000 castles spread throughout Scotland in varying states of disrepair. Many were built between the 1100s and early 1600s due to the violent history between the Scottish clans and Norman-English invaders.

The most famous is Edinburgh Castle, overlooking the city of Edinburgh, and it's the perfect place to begin your exploration of Scotland’s castles, and Scotland’s history in general. There has been a royal castle at the location since the 12th century, and it continued to be a royal residence until 1633.

Other famous Scottish castles include Balmoral, a royal residence, Stirling Castle, Drum Castle and Blair Castle. As well as visiting some of Scotland’s castles to learn more about the country's history, you can also overnight in others to add a little further magic to your Scottish castle itinerary.

Inverlochy Castle, just outside Fort William has to be top of any visitors list for a castle stay. This beautiful 19th century castle is surrounded by the luscious green of the evergreen trees and the sparkling blue from the nearby loch, and Queen Victoria stated in her diaries that “I never saw a lovelier or more romantic spot”.
