The variety of weather conditions, from the mild climate of the south and east of Scotland to the harsher environment of the far north, together with varied geology, allow a huge range of plants to grow throughout Scotland. Simply travelling through the Scottish countryside allows you to experience a botanical wonderland but there are also over 400 Scottish gardens, woodlands and plant nurseries open to visitors.

The west coast of Scotland is influenced by the Gulf Stream and so has a milder climate leading to stunning growths of rhododendrons, magnolias and camellias. On the east there are more formal gardens on grand castle estates or in tranquil city escapes.

Inverewe Gardens is popular choice and a wide variety of plants flourish here thanks to the Gulf Stream, including tropical plants more often seen in South America and the South Pacific. You can also see a number of Californian Redwoods.

Logan Botanic Garden on the south-western tip of Scotland, is Scotland's most exotic Garden. It is also influenced by the Gulf Stream and has an almost subtropical climate. Garden features include Palm Trees, Eucalyptus and Giant Gunnera and the Walled Garden is a showcase for exotic plants. Both Glasgow and Edinburgh have stunning botanic gardens and in the Scottish Borders region you can visit Dawyck Botanic Garden which specialises in rare trees.

And in North East Scotland you've got Crathes Castle, Garden and Estate, as well as Pitmeddan Garden. At Crathes, you can visit the castle but your focus may be on the stunning nature trails and walled garden as well as the massive yew hedges, planted around the year 1700.

Pitmeddan is a re-created Scottish Renaissance walled garden with unique floral designs made up of 30,000 annual bedding plants. While there you can also visit their Museum of Farming Life.
